STUDI-NAVIGATOR
The “Studi-Navigator” makes it easier to start studying and compiles the most important topics and formalities for first-year students. There are also news, dates, contact persons, addresses and lots of good tips. We particularly recommend the information on the orientation units, which provide an initial insight into the structure and organization of the subject.
Target group
First-year students, student advisors and OU tutors

The “Studi-Navigator” is published once a year for the winter semester in mid-September.

What to study and for what?
Sign languages and sign language interpreting
Prof. Dr. Christian Rathmann, 01.12.2009
What to study and for what?
The courses of study offered at the Institute for German Sign Language and Communication of the Deaf, Sign Languages and Sign Language Interpreting, are comparable to the courses of study of other languages such as German, English or Romance Studies. They have three core areas of content: language practice (and interpreting practice), "Deaf Studies" (deaf culture) and sign language linguistics. In addition to the study conditions, the lecture will present a variety of career perspectives. Furthermore, interesting insights into the Deaf community as a linguistic-cultural minority will be given.
The lecturer, Prof. Dr. Christian Rathmann, worked at the Institute for German Sign Language and Communication of the Deaf at the University of Hamburg.

In the context of the lecture series "What to study and how to study for what", subjects of the University of Hamburg are presented in order to support career choice and student decisions. Since summer semester 2009, these lectures have been recorded as a videocast for the University of Hamburg's central media platform, Lecture2Go. Since the winter semester 2006/2007 they have been available as podcasts, which can be downloaded at www.podcampus.de/wwwstudieren.
