Today is the International Day of Sign Languages. It was launched in 2017 by the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD). This day is about recognizing the different sign languages, preserving them and raising awareness about the realities of life for deaf people in a hearing world.
The Day of the Sign Languages is the starting signal for the Week of the Deaf, in which deaf people and their families and friends in the numerous sign language communities around the world come together to inform about sign language with different actions for one week, to sensitize people for the daily barriers in the life of deaf people and to celebrate the special, own culture of deaf people.
In Hamburg, an event will be held by the Hamburg Association of the Deaf tomorrow, 9/24-22, to honor this occasion. Starting at 10am, there will be a celebration at Bernadottestr. 128, with a panel discussion, sign art and a barbecue.
Our corpus project has also created a video for you on the occasion of the special day.
We wish everyone a great Day of Sign Languages!
