On 30 April 2018, Mr. Gerardo Ortega from the MPI in Nijmegen gave a guest lecture at the IDGS entitled "The role of gesture in the acquisition of a sign language as a second language"." He presented his recent experimental studies on the gesture/sign interface in hearing learners of Dutch Sign Language and discussed concepts for the representation of actions and objects in the presentation of 'silent gestures' and their influence on learning a sign language. After the very well attended lecture, many questions were raised and the lively discussion with Gerardo Ortega continued during dinner with employees and students, making it a particularly successful scientific and cultural exchange at the IDGS.
