From 30 January to 3 February 2023, scientists from the University of Hamburg, and other scientific institutions presented their research at the "Wir wollen`s wissen" week. This week gives students the possebility to come in contact with different scientific topics and experts. This year, Annika Herrmann, Britta Harms, Cornelia Loos, Janika Thies, Patricia Barbeito Rey-Geissler, Sarah Schwarzenberg and Simone Scholl brought the topic of "Sign language - (not) a language like any other" into classrooms. They were guests at three schools in Hamburg.
In their lecture, the employees of the Institute for German Sign Language and Communication of the Deaf (IDGS) clarified myths about German Sign Language and brought exciting facts to the students. Because you can do with sign languages everything you do with other languages - from informing to discussing to telling jokes. Only everything is visible and not audible! Furthermore, it was about the research and teaching at the IDGS. Of course, the scientists were also available to answer any questions the young people might have.
