Today is the International Mother Language Day. It was first proclaimed by UNESCO in 2000 as a commemorative day for the "promotion of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism".On this day, attention is drawn to a wide variety of minority languages. In 2005, for example, the focus was on sign languages and Braille.
The theme of this year's International Mother Language Day is "Multilingual education - a necessity to transform education".
The goal of the day is to celebrate the world's expressions in their diversity, to advocate for the preservation of linguistic diversity and for quality education in the mother tongues - or, in other words, first languages - of all people.
