We once again took part in the "Wir wollen's wissen" ("We want to know") campaign day this year. Simon Kollien and Anike Fiedler, along with interpreters Jutta Feuerle and Julia Ruf, visited a seventh grade class at the Helene Lange Gymnasium. They were eagerly awaited. One student had even googled how to introduce oneself in sign language beforehand. Although the introduction was in American Sign Language, we still felt very welcome. There was great enthusiasm, and many questions were asked about various topics related to the language and culture of deaf people.
After a short quiz, the students received a brief introduction to DGS, enabling them to introduce themselves and share where they are from and how they are doing. It was nice to see how curious and open-minded the children were about the topic.
We could have stayed much longer because the questions just kept coming. We are delighted that this event gave us the opportunity to inform the students about the everyday lives of deaf people and their language.
