University Day gives people interested in going to college he opportunity to inform themselves about the course offerings at the University of Hamburg. The Institute for German Sign Language and Communication of the Deaf (IDGS) was represented at the event: Visiting professor Cornelia Loos and her colleagues Stefan Goldschmidt and Anike Fiedler introduced prospective students to the various B.A. and M.A. degree programs the institute offers. They answered questions such as “What is German Sign Language?” and “How do interpreters work with a visual language?” In addition, our faculty provided insights into the culture and history of sign language communities, as well as into sign linguistics and translation studies. Of course, they also answered a plethora of questions from the audience. In the afternoon, Stefan Goldschmidt offered a DGS trial lessont for those interested in taking up a B.A. at the institute.
