Every year in January, “Wir wollen’s wissen!“ (=We want to know!) takes place with a varied program. On January 24, 2024, Britta Harms and Simone Scholl brought the topic “Sign language - (not) a language like any other” into the classroom. This year we were at a school in Hamburg Fischbek-Falkenberg.
In their presentation, the employees of the Institute for German Sign Language and Communication of the Deaf (IDGS) clarified myths about German sign language and brought exciting facts to the students. Because you can do everything with sign language that you can do with other languages - from providing information to discussing and telling jokes. Except that you can see everything and not hear it! It was also about research and teaching at the IDGS. Of course, the scientists were also on hand to answer any questions the young people had. The interest was great again and we will certainly be back next year.
