On 20 February 2024, the "Unitag 2024" took place at the University of Hamburg, a university-wide event for high-school students in the professional orientation phase.
Once again, the students were offered a great, varied programme of lectures, information stands and advice on our university's degree programmes, as well as other general topics such as student financing and university sports.
The IDGS was also strongly represented again: Cornelia Loos and Liona Paulus gave two 45-minute introductions to sign languages in Lecture Hall K and presented the IDGS with its main research areas and degree programmes to the curious young audience.
Another item on the programme was a 45-minute DGS taster course run by our DGS lecturer Simon Kollien.
The students learned, for example, the first DGS signs to conduct a short dialogue in DGS, how to spell their own name using the finger alphabet, and, of course, the sign for “Hamburg”, which is probably based on the traditional "Elbsegler" cap.
Two of our sign language interpreters ensured barrier-free communication during all programme points.
It was a pleasure for us to share our fascination for sign languages with young people. We hope to see you again soon at the IDGS!
