From 12 to 23 August 2024, the DGfS SummerSchool “Form-Meaning Mismatches in Spoken and Visual Communication” took place at the University of Göttingen. About 230 students at master and PhD level from 40 countries participated and our master student Isabeau Lettow was one of them.
The SummerSchool of the “German Linguistic Society (DGfS)” was jointly organized by the Priority Programme 2392 “Visual Communication (ViCom)” and the Göttingen Research Training Group 2636 “Form-Meaning Mismatches”, offering 28 different courses given by international leading experts. The courses were divided in the four tracks “Semantics/Pragmatics”, “Syntax/Morphology”, “Visual Communication” and “Foundations”. From Monday to Friday, four courses a day were held from 9am to 5.30pm. For the second week, the courses changed. In addition, poster presentations were held on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the evening. There was also time between the courses to connect with others in the coffee breaks or to grab something to eat in the nearby cafeteria during the lunch break.
Our graduate student Isabeau Lettow participated in this rich program and attended the track dedicated to “Visual Communication”. She also presented a poster about the “Classifier handshape choice in German Sign Language (DGS)”. The two weeks in Göttingen were a valuable experience, packed with inspiring exchange and new insights into gestures, cognition, Sign Languages, and more.
