The IDGS went on a trip! At the end of March 2025, six students and two staff visited the University of Washington for a week-long exchange program. The group had the opportunity to study American Sign Language (ASL) alongside American students. They also gained insights into interpreting practices in the U.S. and exchanged ideas with the Neuroplasticity and Language Lab (NLL), where ASL-related research was presented. A campus tour and a joint dinner with the local team provided an opportunity to network with local students.
The program also included a visit to the “Voices Off Lounge.” Run by deaf individuals, this center promotes exchange between deaf and hearing communities through an immersive approach; all events are conducted in ASL.
There were also plenty of opportunities to immerse themselves in American culture, such as attending a baseball game, and exploring the city. Of course, a visit to the Space Needle was a must. Overall, it was a great, exciting, and enriching experience!
The trip was funded by the University of Hamburg's "International Teaching and Learning Formats" program (acquired by Anne Wienholz and Annika Herrmann) and the IDGS.
