Presentation of a research project by Aleksandra Oniszczuk
The lecture will present the habilitation project "The Deaf in the Kingdom of Poland (1815-1918): Origins of Cultural Minorities". It is the first comprehensive study of the history of the Deaf in the Polish territories before the 20th century. At the same time, the project attempts to place the history of this group in a broader European context.
The research examines the changes brought about by the establishment of the first modern educational institutions and early initiatives to create organizations for the empowerment and self-advocacy of Deaf people. The project analyzes the development of independent communities of Deaf people with their own identities, needs and goals. The study goes beyond the perspective of the Polish ethnic majority and includes other groups, in particular the Jewish community. It also takes into account gender issues.
The lecture will present the first results of the research, which was conducted during a six-month research stay at the Institute for Rehabilitation Sciences at the Humboldt University.
