On the morning of April 30, 2024, the Institute of German Sign Language and Communication of the Deaf (IDGS) at the University of Hamburg had the honour of welcoming Aleksandra Oniszczuk for an exciting lecture entitled “The Deaf in the Kingdom of Poland (1815-1918)”.
The lecture was multi-faceted and offered a variety of perspectives. The atmosphere on site was lively and numerous students, lecturers and interested parties actively participated and took part in stimulating discussions.
It is particularly noteworthy that Aleksandra Oniszczuk presented rare visual materials and little-known historical data on the history of deaf people in 19th century Poland. She thus provided a differentiated insight into a social chapter that has often been overlooked in historiography.
The lecture not only broadened the academic horizons of the participants, but also deepened their understanding of the historical and cultural background of deaf communities.
We would like to thank Aleksandra Oniszczuk for her inspiring contribution and all those present for their participation and interest!
